+100 FPS in Minecraft 1.8 (2026 guide)

Version 1.8.9 is still the king of PvP — and the fastest version to run. Here is the exact checklist competitive players use.

1. Video settings that matter

Graphics: Fast. Fancy clouds and fancy grass cost 10–20% FPS for zero competitive benefit.
Render distance: 6–8 chunks for PvP. Every +2 chunks is roughly −15% FPS.
Particles: Decreased. Entity shadows: off. VSync: off (use uncapped + external limiter if you get tearing).
Max framerate: Unlimited while tuning, then cap 10–20 above your monitor refresh once stable.

2. JVM arguments (2 minutes, big payoff)

Give 1.8.9 two gigabytes: -Xmx2G -Xms2G. More RAM does NOT mean more FPS on old versions.
Use G1GC: -XX:+UseG1GC -XX:MaxGCPauseMillis=30. This kills the random 0.5s freezes.
Close Discord hardware acceleration and browser tabs while playing.

3. The lazy option: a tuned setup

Performance clients and modpacks ship with these settings pre-tuned and no heavy launcher overhead — typically +80–150 FPS over vanilla on the same PC.
